The Cast Soft Gaze by Ditte Ejlerskov presents a restrained yet charged embodiment of the Goddess of Oxytocin, rendered in bronze with a calm, withdrawn presence. The sculpture holds a moment of controlled intimacy, where softness is not sentimental but deliberate, and care is held rather than expressed.

The work
Emerging from Ejlerskov's ongoing investigation into the biological and cultural mechanics of love, the work frames oxytocin not as romance but as structure. The lowered gaze and composed facial expression suggest regulation and self-possession, while the shield-like extension from the neck introduces a physical boundary: protection as a necessary counterpart to connection.
Ejlerskov's practice consistently examines the tension between attachment and survival. In The Cast Soft Gaze, this tension is formalised through contrast: smooth, serene facial planes against the assertive sculptural extension and the weight of the onyx block. The goddess figure becomes a stabilising force, quiet, authoritative and intact.
The sculpture invites a reconsideration of care as something guarded and intentional rather than freely given.

Materials and making
Cast bronze
Bronze holds detail that few materials can. Each bronze is cast from the same mould and hand-chased to retain the detail of the artist's original. Patina is applied individually, so tonal and surface variation should be expected across the edition.

01
Mould and wax
The artist's original is captured in a flexible mould, from which a hollow wax replica is taken and refined by hand until every surface matches the source.
02
Lost-wax casting
The wax is encased in a ceramic shell and fired; the wax runs out and molten bronze is poured into the void it leaves, taking on the exact form of the original.
03
Chasing and assembly
The rough cast is released from its shell, sprues removed, and seams chased away by hand so the metal reads as a single continuous surface.
04
Patina and finish
The finished bronze is coloured with heat and chemistry, then sealed with a hand-applied patina unique to each edition.

Ditte Ejlerskov
1982, Frederikshavn, Denmark · Painting, Sculpture, Installation, Digital Art
Ditte Ejlerskov is a Danish visual artist who graduated in 2009 from Malmö Art Academy, with additional studies at the Funen Art Academy and the Cooper Union School of Art in New York. Her earlier work drew on mainstream culture, politics and internet imagery, while recent series turn toward chromotherapy, feminist mythology and the intersection of technology with bodily and spiritual experience.
She works across woven and painted canvases, bronze casting, 3D printing and augmented reality. Her digital sculptures are deliberately unskinned and raw, closer in feel to plaster casts than rendered products, and she has released them as NFTs that function for her as certificates of ownership rather than as speculation; the forms themselves stay public and downloadable. Her current work is organised around five feminist avatars, beginning with the wrestlers and extending to her Ran figure, standing in a landscape she calls The Plateau.
In 2017 her official portrait of former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt was unveiled at Christiansborg. Her exhibition Undercurrent Breathing opens at Martin Asbæk Gallery, Copenhagen, on 17 January 2026. She has also exhibited at Nikolaj Kunsthal, Viborg Kunsthal, Röda Sten Konsthall, Malmö Konsthall and Kristianstad Konsthall, among other venues.
