Willem van Hooff builds objects with a raw, graphic directness, forms that look drawn by hand and made by hand. EROSION TABLE brings that language into Botticino marble, a warm Italian stone carved into a body that looks worn and shaped by time.

EROSION TABLE

The work

The title is the idea: the piece is made to look eroded, its edges softened as though weather and water had worked the stone rather than a chisel. Cut from solid blocks, the veining runs its own way through each example.

It sits between furniture and artefact, a usable table that carries the feeling of something dug up rather than manufactured.

Materials & making

Hand-carved marble

Marble is worked by removal; nothing is added back. Each block is unique, and the carver reads its veining and density before the first cut. What remains is stone that has been in the ground for millions of years, shaped over months into a single, unrepeatable object.

  1. 01

    Selecting the block

Stone is chosen from the Apuan quarries above Pietrasanta, assessed for grain, colour and freedom from flaws before work begins.

  2. 02

    Roughing out

The mass is reduced toward the form using point and tooth chisels, establishing proportion and volume from the solid block.

  3. 03

    Carving the detail

Master carvers refine the surface with rasp, riffler and drill, translating the artist's intent into stone by hand.

  4. 04

    Finishing

The surface is worked from coarse to fine (matte, honed or polished) according to the work, revealing the marble's depth.

Portrait of Willem van Hooff

The artist

Willem van Hooff

1992, Netherlands · Design, Ceramics, Sculpture, Furniture

Willem van Hooff is a Dutch designer and artist who graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2018 and subsequently established his own studio in the city. He describes himself as a modern craftsman, favouring primitive techniques, traditional machinery and raw or recycled materials — earthenware, salvaged wood and found objects — to create tactile, hand-made furniture and vessels.

His practice is driven by a belief that much modern production lacks soul, drawing on historical traditions, diverse cultures and the contrast between craft and contemporary society.
