In the Studio: A Material-First Practice
Edition Solenne30 October 20258 minEditorial preview
A morning spent watching a work move from raw material to finished edition.
The studio is quiet in the way that serious work is quiet. There is no music, only the intermittent sound of tools finding their surface. We arrive early, before the light is fully up, to watch a single edition take shape.
You cannot rush a surface. It tells you when it is finished.
What becomes clear across the morning is that the material leads. The artist responds to it — to a flaw in the grain, a pool in the glaze — rather than imposing a predetermined form. This is the difference between fabrication and making.
